Good house parties are all about good company, music and food. To throw a house party that won’t be forgotten for days, try considering something theme based. No more do house parties mean a casual serving of crisps or pizzas straight out of the box. Here are a few ways to jazz up your evenings and make playing host more fun.

  1. Host a viewing party. Nachos, sandwiches, chips and dip and other “pub” fare. Try super simple sliders for something meaty and handy. Here is an amazing recipe for Italian inspired-sliders {see image}. Stick to star foods which don’t need any accompaniments.
  2. Cocktail hour.  Adult beverages and finger foods, passed hors d’oeuvres and lite bites. Let guests make their own cocktails. Have a few favorite recipes on cards, and all the ingredients on hand. People mix and shake and think it’s super-fun. Also, remember to keep hors d’oeuvres to one bite. No one wants to talk or kiss with a mouthful.
  3. The after party. If a party bummed out or went too well to call it a night, offer to host an after party of desserts and famous after-dinner drinks. Champagne and cherries {with a touch of amaretto} if you’re feeling indulgent or digestifs if moderation is very clearly out of the question. You may be familiar with port (tawny, ruby, or vintage), but have you met her sexy cousin Madeira? It’s named after an island off the coast of Portugal, where local wine — fortified to prevent spoilage — was sent with Portuguese merchantmen to colonies in the Americas and West Indies. Winemakers discovered that upon its crossing and re-crossing of the stiflingly hot equator, the wine had oxidized in its barrels – thus making them extremely stable, and needless to say – yum. Serving Madeira makes for a very good party story too!
  4. High tea. Offer a choice of offbeat desserts. Chocolate a complete no-no. Instead serve something sweet and sinful like a peach crisp with vanilla ice cream and something lighter like poached pears. Guests usually take some of each and leave with the sweetest memories.
  5. Potluck. You’re in luck if your company enjoys potlucks. You can bring the potluck home by asking friends or family to get the ingredients of their choice and cooking them together. It’s always helpful to pre-decide a cuisine, the last thing you want is to be serving that thai curry with pizza, and that pizza with chinese.
  6. Host a play date. How about juice and milk boxes, finger fruits (grapes, cut up bananas), puffed snacks and peanut butter and jelly. Sounds wonderful for the adults too, right?
