On the art of better living

“In the whisper in a lover’s ear

smell of a baby’s head

warmth of happy eyes

tight embrace on a winter’s day

I will feel in silence”

***

“My fingers wrapped around a cup of chocolate

becoming an extension of you when we kiss

running my fingers over old pictures

trying to feel old memories come to life again

I will touch in silence”

***

“Reaching out to unhappy eyes

hearing wrinkles tell their unheard stories

courage of an uneducated progressive mind

rigidity of a timid traveller

I will listen in silence”

***

“Feeling at home at an old bookstore

freshly sprinkled cinnamon on a warm vanilla roll

stench of pain on sparkling clean guilty hands

fragrance of a lover the morning after

I will smell in silence”

***

“Because in silence can we truly feel

the most common rarities

when our eyes are dense with mad violence

a silent emotion can change our hearts forever”

***

“In silence can we communicate the best

as silence cannot be misquoted

it is the surest of having a great conversation

because only by listening do we truly offer ourselves”

***

Everything that can be enjoyed in company can sometimes be better enjoyed in silence. Someday it may be a glass of wine with a book as an intelligent companion. On one such day, the olive, cheese and bacon bread can create just the right amount of magic.

Image

Ingredients:

  • 5 fl oz (15cl) of white wine
  • 3 1/3 fl oz (10cl) olive oil
  • 4 eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 1/2 cup (250g)  all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder (about 5g)
  • 5 ounces (150g) grated cheddar
  • 1 large onion
  • 3 1/2 ounces (100g) bacon
  • 7 ounces (200g) city ham, already cooked — sold as “ready to serve”
  • 3 1/2 ounces (100g) black olives
  • 3 1/2 ounces (100g) green olives
  • 2 tablespoons chopped parsley

How to:

  • In a large bowl, whisk together the wine, oil, eggs and salt.
  • Separately, mix the flour and baking powder, sift and stir into the liquid preparation.
  • Chop the onion finely and melt in a skillet with a bit of olive oil (or butter).
  • Add the bacon to onions and cook for a few minutes then keep aside. Take care of draining the mixture to avoid a soggy dough.
  • Slice the olives and parsley and cut the ham.
  • Add all ingredients and grated cheese to the basic preparation and mix.
  • Pour into a buttered loaf pan, 9 by 5 inches. 8. Bake in the oven for 1 hour at 360°F (180°C).
